The piece you are seeing here is a project I’ve been wanting to make for several years now. The idea was to use DAZ Studio to create an American version of Lucy in Narnia when she meets Santa.
Obviously this deviates somewhat from C.S. Lewis’ original story, which depicted a group of four British siblings, who are presumably native to that part of the world. But I thought about what it would be like to have an American depiction of this story, either from our contemporary time period, or from say 500 years in the future. Because Narnia is such a timeless story, a story that everyone with a soul, from every culture can relate to, I figured it would lend itself well to something like this.
I strongly believe that the original artist of any piece should be respected. That said, I also think that it is really cool that people in China and India can create their own version of Spiderman and Superman that take place in their own cities and within their own cultural contexts. They do this without erasing the brilliance of the original, especially when we look at something like the Spiderverse, where many versions of Spiderman all exist simultaneously on different Earths all across the multiverse. It shows how timeless and universal these stories really are!
In the same way, I wanted to create an American version of Lucy meeting Santa, in a way that honored the original artwork. I have been wanting to do this for some time, and then while I was in Florida, I met someone who reminded me of my desire to create this image.
As an author, one of the best pieces of advice I’ve received is to write stories for myself, to enjoy the world that I am creating, and process whatever it is that I need or desire to process within the story for myself. But with that said, I hope that you enjoy admiring this scene as much as I enjoyed creating it.
Merry Christmas to all of you!
